Origins

Herslebslund was built in 1828, originally as a Forester's residence on the Corselitze estate.
It was built as a home for Forstkandidat N.P.Rosenstand (1804 - 1859), who started to work for Corselitze as Assistant Forester in 1827 and became Forester in 1834. He was succeeded in 1859 by his son Otto, who was Forester until 1896. About that time, a new Forester's residence was built at Hesnæs and Herslebslund became a farm, initially of 34 tdr. (about 19 ha. or 40 acres), the smallest of the Corselitze farms. About 20 years ago the farmland was split off and Herslebslund became a residential property only.

Location

Herslebslund is on the east coast of Falster, south of Stubbekøbing and north east of Nykøbing Falster.

Name

Herslebslund is named after Peter Hersleb Classen (1738 - 1825), or possibly after his nephew Peter Hersleb Classen the younger (1804 - 1886), who has his own memorial (picture on left) in the grounds of Corselitze manor house.

The Hersleb memorial, Corselitze estate

Both of these were directors of the Classen family trust, "Det Classenske Fideicommis", owner of the Corselitze estate since the trust was established in 1792. (More about Corselitze see here (in Danish))

The building

The house is built in typical Danish thatched, half-timbered style. However, the half-timbering is concealed on three sides of the house by a covering of reeds held in place by trelliswork. This is typical of many of the houses on the Corselitze estate and is claimed to provide extra insulation to protect from the cold easterly winds in winter. It's not a regional building style, as many people suppose: in fact it was dreamed up by a Copenhagen architect who was adviser to the Corselitze estate around 1900.

Residents at Herslebslund

1828 - 1859 N.P.Rosenstand (Head Forester)
N.P.Rosenstand's main claim to fame is his "honourable mention" in Hans Andersen's diary (July 1850). Andersen visited Corselitze that summer, and during his visit he was shaved and trimmed by Rosenstand. He also visited Rosenstand's house (i.e. Herslebslund) and collected stones and shells from the beach nearby. But, as far as we know, this was only a daytime visit, so we can't erect a memorial plate saying "Hans Andersen slept here".
1859 - 1897 Otto Rosenstand (Head Forester, son of N.P.Rosenstand)
1897 - 1902 Skovfoged Ortved (Head Forester)
1902 - 1937 Gaardbestyrer Vilh.Andersen (Farm Manager)
1937 - ???? N.Chr.Nielsen (Tenant Farmer)
